King Penguin: Greenpeace protects Antarctic Sea with Augmented Reality

King Penguin makes protecting the Antarctic Sea a winning game.

The Antarctic Sea - the habitat of penguins - is under pressure. Greenpeace is taking action to create awareness about this fragile ecosystem. Together with Greenpeace, we developed the King Penguin AR app. Use augmented reality to search for penguins in your area, learn more about their habitat, and sign the petition to preserve the Antarctic Ocean.

In search of penguins

To bring extra attention to protecting the Antarctic Sea - the penguins' habitat - we, as app developers, were commissioned by Greenpeace to develop the King Penguin AR app. The concept is similar to the popular Pokémon GO, only now users go in search of penguins. Found a penguin? Then take a picture of the penguin using augmented reality to unlock the search for the next penguin. Furthermore, the app contains fun facts, which, like the photos taken, can be shared with friends. In addition to the quest, users can also sign the petition in the app to protect the Antarctic Sea.

Management with attention to environment and safety

Through the CMS, penguins can be positioned by selecting a location on the map. When a user is within two kilometers of a positioned penguin, the app will display it. For users who are not within this radius, a random location will be generated. In addition, there are some prohibited areas; no penguins will be positioned in these areas. Examples include highways, train tracks, hospitals and bus lanes.

"Speaking for both myself, Joost and the entire projecteam, I would like to thank DTT deeply for your efforts. We are thrilled with the end result! When we approached you with the request to make penguins appear everywhere in the Netherlands through AR, we received an exceptional proposal. A very entertaining elaboration of our campaign to make the South Pole a protected marine reserve. Together we quickly came up with the name for the King Penguin app and fun occasions to use the app so everyone can search virtual penguins via AR in their own neighborhood. By combining this quest with information about the animals and their threatened environment at the South Pole, awareness is created in a playful way. And that's exactly what we wanted. Once again, compliments on how fast you brought this amazing app into the digital world. I experienced it as a very pleasant collaboration."
